Scottish National Point Prevalence Survey of Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Prescribing 2011

Publication Date: 03 April 2012

We were commissioned by the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorate (SGHSCD) to develop and implement a second national point prevalence survey of HAI and antimicrobial prescribing. The decision was taken to adopt the ECDC protocol, which will enable European benchmarking of HAI and antimicrobial prescribing prevalence using a consistent approach.

The survey of 13,558 inpatients took place between September 2011 and October 2011. The hospitals surveyed included all acute, paediatric, independent and a representative sample of non-acute, hospitals in Scotland.

Data returned to HPS was analysed with appropriate statistical support for inclusion in this final report.
