Guidance on Vaccine Storage and Handling

Publication Date: 29 December 2017

This guidance sets out a framework outlining the minimum standards that are required for effective storage and handling of vaccines thereby minimising the risk of compromising the effectiveness of vaccines given to patients.

This document updates the guidance on vaccine storage and handling issued by Health Protection Scotland in 2013 and supplements the recommendations in Chapter 3 of Immunisation against Infectious Disease 2006 (the Green Book).

The guidance is aimed at all staff involved with the planning or delivery of immunisation programmes in all settings. The purpose of this guidance is to support NHS boards by providing a framework within which NHS boards are expected to align their local policies regarding vaccine storage and handling.
