The Global Polio Eradication Initiative has reported a case of polio in Chereponi district, Northern Province, Ghana in a patient who became paralysed on 23 July 2019.
The World Health Organization (WHO) advises all travellers to polio-affected areas be fully vaccinated against polio. Travellers to polio-affected areas should consider a booster of poliomyelitis vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since most recent vaccination.
The TRAVAX and fitfortravel websites have updated the recommendations for travel to Ghana to reflect this.
Further advice on poliomyelitis can be found on the TRAVAX (for health professionals) and fitfortravel (for the general public) websites.
