Scotland is the first country in the UK to announce its plans for a deposit return scheme for drinks containers, as part of plans to combat climate change, and to prevent discarded drinks containers from ending up on Scottish streets and in Scottish seas.

The deposit return scheme will include aluminium and steel cans as well as drinks containers made of glass and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. Consumers will pay a 20p deposit when they buy a drink in a single-use container, which will be refunded when they return the empty bottle or can.
