WHO Hand Hygiene Day is on 5 May 2019 – ‘Clean care for all - it’s in your hands’

Publication Date: 29 April 2019

The ‘WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean your hands’ day takes place on 5 May 2019 and this year focuses on the importance of hand hygiene being practiced not only in hospitals but in all care settings including care homes, GP surgeries, primary care and by all staff and visitors.

We support this every year and provide a hand hygiene day webpage with links to the campaign materials.

Using the correct technique and product for hand hygiene is important and you can find out more about this including step-by-step hand hygiene technique in the Hand Hygiene section of the National Infection Prevention and Control Manual (NIPCM)

WHO are undertaking a global survey on infection prevention and control to provide them with a global picture of practice and HPS are co-ordinating this for Scotland. The survey consists of the completion of two assessment tools which boards can then use locally to identify hand hygiene issues and assist with developing local improvement plans. We encourage all NHS boards to take part in this and register on their website. The closing date for completion of the survey is 16 July 2019.

We will use social media to promote the day using #infectionPrevention #handhygiene #healthforall and would encourage Boards and organisations to use these in their tweets.
